Born in Tehran and raised in the bay area of California, Hushidar "Hushi" Mortezaie moved to New York in 1994 immersing himself in the world of high fashion for over a decade. He helped ignite the rage for Rave and Japanese Anime through his work with Sex and the City costumer Patricia Field, the influence of which still reverberates today. His collaboration with Michael Sears led to Sears and Robot, a New York boutique gallery as a pop pun on American commercial retail corporation, translating popular culture into pop couture fashion and art objects. Mortezaie's work beginning in the 90's prompted the rise of Persian calligraphy on textiles and hejab in global fashion through his pioneering celebration of his Iranian heritage at a time when many hid their identity in exile. This inspired a younger Middle Eastern generation of creatives to explore identity through self-expression and personal style. His work has been exhibited nationally to wide attention by media including Vogue, W Magazine, Elle, and Bidoun magazine. His designs worn by Beyonce, Brad Pit, Sarah Jessica Parker, and model Linda Evangelista transferred his visual messages to the masses. His discourse has continued to center on a cultural critique that negates yet celebrates beauty and branding. His focus in defying convention through the use of stereotype, ornamentation and packaging are constants that have evolved but are mainstays in his representational and decorative conceptual art.Mortezaie's mediums of work include painting, illustration, silkscreen, installation art and fashion design.Hushidar has made California his home since 2004.
