Nostalgic memories are what diasporic people carry with them across the globe. These memories are fondly recalled and often stand as symbolic touchstones for our collective Persian-ness. What’s fascinating to me, is how selective these memories can be. What happens to memories of auntie smoking in the bathroom, that odd lingering smell of poo and cigarette, the fear of finding a cockroach in dampayee, or slipping in the toilet with that dampayee, not to mention memories of Aftabeh, and how gradually all these went away and it became fashionable for households to have a “Farangi” western toilet instead of Irani. This ashtray is meant to bring forward abject memories that are buried in our collective Iranian psyche.
